Virus Wont Let Me Open Anything I Download On My Macbook Pro
First of all, please bear with me. I'm a first time user, am NOT heavily tech savvy and it's possible Team Viewer might not be capable of serving my purpose. I have two laptops. My primary: A Macbook Air 2010 with OSX High Sierra 10.13.6 2. My secondary: An Acer Aspire 5532 with Windows. And when an app hangs, it freezes you out and won't let you do anything, including quit out of it. Enter: Force Quit. You can call up the Force Quit menu from the Apple icon in the upper-left.

Internet access is blocked due to malware infection, how to eliminate it?
This tutorial describes how to re-establish Internet access if blocked by malware. Some malware variants modify Internet browser settings by adding a Proxy Server. In these cases, you will be unable to visit any websites, and thus not able to download the required software to eliminate the security infections. Other types of malware change the computer's DNS settings or add various entries to your operating system's Hosts file. By altering these settings, computer viruses can cause redirect issues or completely block the Internet connection. If you cannot access the Internet, and suspect that this is caused by a virus infection, check the settings below.
If you cannot access the Internet due to a malware infection, first try booting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. You can find out how to do this in our 'how to remove spyware?' section. If you are still unable to access the Internet, use these instructions:
It is recommended to run a free scan with Malwarebytes - a tool to detect viruses and malware on your computer. You will need to purchase the full version to remove infections. Free trial available.
Check Proxy Server settings in Internet Explorer:
1. Open Internet Explorer. At the top right corner of the main window, click the 'wrench' icon. In the opened drop down menu, choose 'Internet Options'.
2. In the opened window, select the 'Connections' tab.
3. In the 'Connections' tab, click the 'LAN settings' button.
4. In the 'Lan settings' window, ensure that the 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' option is not checked (otherwise, uncheck it and click 'OK').
Check your computer's DNS settings:
1. Click the 'Windows logo' (Start button).
2. In the opened menu, select 'Control Panel'.
3. In the opened window, click 'Network and Internet'.
4. In the opened window, click 'View network status and stats'.
5. Click 'Local Area Connection'.
6. In the opened window, click the 'Properties' button.
7. In the 'Properties' window, select 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' and click the 'Properties' button.
8. In the opened window, check if 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' is checked.
Check your operating system's Hosts file.
Locate your Hosts file. You should find it at %systemroot% system32driversetc (commonly, it will be c:windowssystem32driversetc). Open the Hosts file with Notepad and verify that no unusual values have been added to it.
These are the default values, and yours should be the same:
Default Windows XP Hosts File:

Well, these settings are very helpful for the users to protect their computer from viruses.
thanks for the tutorial. Some AV (Eg. ESET Antivirus) has an interface that would allow you to customized your block sites list. It could be helpful to some users who dont know much about commands. But this is good also. Thanks
I love the article. I didnt know that malwares such as this could exists. The only protection I have in my pc is ESET Antivirus. The services are good as I dont detect and experience this problem. No threats has been infecting my PC since I installed it.But Im glad I came across your blog and I know what to do in any case that I have encountered this.

Im on windows 8.1, i did all the steps above, i installed bunch of antivirus and antimalware programs but my browser keeps betraying me. Im using adblock, and some of the page which DID loads would have an absurd amount of ads (like 290 ads) blocked by adblocker. Any alternative solution for me? Thanks.
Hi it worked for me. I had Host file populated with values. Now internet browsers r working fine!
Um... this is what I have:

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
Check this video I made very detailed https://youtu.be/bsvD9RsZEGU
For those that can not open host file with notepad are save changes you need to right click the host file go into properties then change file permissionsize make sure you have full control of the file then it should allow you to edit it and save changes
Natalie, I got the same thing. But went to Microsoft's site, and apparently those characters belong there. I was puzzled for a minute as well.
Ok So I found some extra text in my host file:
# For example:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino(dot)acme(dot)com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x(dot)acme(dot)com # x client host
Now I want to delete this text but my computer will not let me open it??? I was able to browse and open with notepad. But Is it ok for me to save it as a notepad file and put it back in the folder?
I am logged in as an admisitrator
Now I also need to mention that I have run these programs: ( Malware Bytes, Spy Hunter, AVG, Hitmanpro, Adwcleaner, CC Cleaner) Malware Bytes caught the Pum files and trojan horse and it quarantined them but the next day around the same time, I had the same problem again. I noticed that is made the google chrome icon disappear to a File like picture. None of my internet browsers worked. Only after Every day I had to quarantine this virus, I restarted the computer it it stays gone for 24 hours.
Viruses/Malware IT CAUGHT:
Pum.Bad.Proxy (Registry)
Trogan.Agent (File)
I tried posting yesterday but it never made it... I have tried all of the steps listed, multiple different malware and virus removers, and other similar websites with slightly different ideas for removing this stuff. I've even tried safe mode with networking and run all of the same things. I know it is not the network itself as that was the first thing I tried. I have had ZERO luck in getting rid of it still. Anyone have any ideas? Please help.
I have tried every step listed here including running full system scans with AVG, Microsoft Essentials, Malwarebytes and then some from other similar sites with slight variations to remove it, but no luck for me. I still have a major block not letting me connect my desktop and it is surely not the internet connection itself. The old unused laptop has surely come in handy, but I need my desktop back! Anyone have any other ideas? I'm just about to chuck the machine and salvage the HDD. I have spent over 9 hours trying everything
Hi, after following your advice and opening it after logging in as an administrator, the hosts file doesn't show up anymore? After system 32-drive-etc it says no items match your search so I am unable to change anything/ save the file. Please help :(
How to eliminate Chrome Redirect Virus?
What is Chrome Redirect Virus?
'Chrome Redirect Virus' is a generic name for all rogue applications that modify Google Chrome web browser settings. Typically, this is done without users' consent and, therefore, these applications are categorized as browser hijackers. Research shows that, in most cases, browser hijackers infiltrate systems without permission, change settings, and gather various sensitive information.
Immediately after infiltration, potentially unwanted browser-hijacking programs (PUPs) assign Google Chrome's new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to an alternative URL. Some are even designed to append this identical URL to the target of each browser shortcut. Therefore, users are redirected to certain websites when they search the Internet via the URL bar or simply open a browser/new browser tab. In most cases, promoted websites are fake search engines. Google Chrome is one of the targets for these browser-hijacking applications that also target other popular web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Although most browser hijackers are developed for the Windows Operating System, some target the Mac OS as well. Therefore, the Safari web browser is also at risk. The changes may seem insignificant, however, users are unable to revert them. Research shows that most hijackers reassign browser settings when attempts are made to change them and, therefore, users are often unable to return browsers to their previous states. By forcing users to visit certain websites, PUPs significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
As mentioned above, browser hijackers (and fake search engines) are very likely to collect sensitive information. The list of recorded data typically includes (but is not limited to) users' geographic locations, Internet service providers (ISPs), Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, keystrokes, and mouse movement. This information typically includes confidential details. In addition, PUP developers collect this data to generate revenue - they sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people also have identical intentions and thus there is a high probability that confidential information will be misused. This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you continually encounter redirects to dubious/unwanted websites, we strongly advise you to immediately eliminate all suspicious applications/browser plug-ins and never return to these sites again.
Name | Google Chrome browser hijacker |
Threat Type | Browser Hijacker, Redirect, Search Hijacker, Toolbar, Unwanted New Tab |
Symptoms | Manipulated Internet browser(s) settings (homepage, default Internet search engine, new tab settings). User's are forced to visit hijacker's website and search the Internet using their search engines. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Malwarebytes. |
All browser hijackers are very similar. They offer 'useful functions' (e.g., file conversion, system optimization, anti-virus, download performance increase, and so on), however, these claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy and trick users to install. In fact, PUPs provide no real value for regular users. They cause unwanted redirects and gather private information. In addition, fake search engines often generate false results and intrusive ads. In many cases, users are redirected to malicious sites. Therefore, using fake search engines risks computer infection.
How did browser hijacker install on my computer?
Some browser hijackers have official download websites, however, in most cases, they are distributed using intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of PUPs together with regular apps. Developers do not disclose this information properly - they hide 'bundled apps within 'Custom/Advanced' settings or other sections of the download/installation processes. By skipping download/installation steps and clicking various ads, many users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The main reasons for computer infections are careless behavior and lack of knowledge. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, to prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very careful when browsing the Internet and, especially when downloading/installing software. Intrusive ads often look legitimate, but once clicked, redirect to gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other dubious sites. Most are delivered by adware-type PUPs. If you encounter these suspicious redirects, immediately remove all dubious apps and browser plug-ins. Select 'Custom/Advanced' settings and closely analyze each step of the download/installation processes. Furthermore, decline offers to download/install additional apps and opt-out of those already included. Using a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite is also paramount.
